Della Leblanc
About Della
I’m Della Leblanc - a writer, a reader, and a killer of perfectly good plants. Perfectly good plant species I’ve killed include a fern, hibiscus tree, and a mint plant. I tell you this because when I meet plant people and mention that I’ve successfully killed mint, they stare at me in horror or ask me to come work my magic on their own out of control mint plants. I’m considering taking my super power on the road and booking children’s birthday parties. Watch this space.
During the winter months, when there aren’t enough plants to kill, I mainly stay inside and read romantic comedies. A love affair that started very early when I was unwittingly introduced to them by the woman who ran my 5th grade carpool. I would secretly stuff the glossy red Harlequin paperbacks into my backpack every afternoon and then return them the following day. I spent many a long night reading those novels with a flashlight under the covers. If 5th grade seems too young to be reading that kind of stuff, you’re right. That’s why I had to steal them.
I should note that romance novels were significantly less steamy back then.
As a I got older, I stole longer books. From my grandmother, I borrowed Nora Roberts and Sandra Brown. From my best friend’s mom, I took long bathroom breaks to covertly read her Julia Quinn and Lisa Kleypas books while my friend pounded on the door. And I spent my allowance on Sweet Valley High (and sometimes the College series!). When I got to college myself, the very first things I bought on the internet were Jennifer Crusie books.
And that’s when I got the idea to write my own stuff.
I started out writing vaguely women’s fiction about important topics. But I was 19 and didn’t know anything about important topics. The work was – and I mean this sincerely–mediocre, but more importantly, it was never any fun. Every word was a slog. So I started writing romances. It took me a little while (ahem, years and years), but I finished one and then another. And then I finished one I really liked and thought I should publish.
And to my delight, people no longer had to steal their favorite books from unsuspecting loved ones. They could just download them from anywhere at any time. So I joined the self-publishing revolution. Then I found out that you needed more than just a published story to self-publish. Like a website, with a bio…ta daaaaa!
